Quick-Release Chain Stoppers
Harbour Marines proven range of deck-mounted chain stoppers, incorporating remote release and optional load monitoring, are specifically suited to Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO), Floating Storage and Offloading (FSO), shuttle tankers and the mooring of large tankers to their dedicated offshore facilities. Chain stoppers are available in a range of sizes from 200T to 650T safe working load and incorporate quick release capability under fully loaded conditions.
Each chain stopper may be fitted with a load cell enabling the real time measurement of chain load in single or multiple mooring legs.

Quick-Release Chain Stopper
Features and Benefits
- Quick release of the chain under zero to full load
- Accurate indication of mooring chain loads for single or multiple stoppers
- Simple deck mounted installation and therefore suitable for refit for FSO and FPSO vessels
- Fully integrated workstation package to provide load monitoring, high load alarm indication and data logging
- For bow or stern or spread mooring applications.
Installation

10-Point Spread Mooring, Maxus Waduri FSO
The chain stopper is bolted to a bed plate which is pre-drilled and tapped for the holding down bolts. The bed plate is welded into the vessel's deck structure and under deck stiffening is arranged to suitably transfer the mooring forces into the vessel's hull.
Operation
The chain stopper greatly simplifies the mooring process. The chain is automatically aligned as it enters the stopper and the locking of the chain is a two step operation:
- Lowering the stopper casting over the chain
- Locking up the release mechanism
As the unit allows for rapid release and resetting, it is of particular benefit for spread moorings which require periodic re-tensioning.
The chain stopper can be arranged for both bow and/or stern mooring applications, working singularly or in multiples. For dual leg mooring such as the bow mooring of an FPSO, the stopper can be provided with a simultaneous release facility. Releasing the chain stopper is by the manual hydraulic release unit located near each chain stopper or by remote release from a console.
Optional Features
- Telemetry communication with portable monitor enables load information and alarms to be made available to personnel on board or on a shuttle tanker.
- Local display stations can be installed nearby each chain stopper and are suitable for Class 1 Zone 1 or Zone 2.
- Extensive software analysis by the report generator enables analysis of load events by date, time or magnitude.
- On-line continuous report printing.

Instrumentation Packages
A wide range of hard wire or telemetry linked systems are available providing the following features:
- Remote load monitoring in real time of single or multiple chains stoppers and the provision of LCD or PC display of loads both graphically and numerically.
- Data logging with audible alarm functions for high and low chain tension.
- Local display of loads nearby each chain stopper or remote display at vessel's control room or bridge.
- Telemetry transfer of load information and alarm to a portable monitor which enables personnel to access chain tension information and alarms anywhere on board the vessel.
- Load cells designed specifically for the shipboard operating conditions.
- Electrical equipment suitable for Class 1 Zone 1 or Zone 2 hazardous locations
- Harbour & Marine provides all mechanical equipment, electronics, software and communication systems.
